The NextGen Dairy Farmers Programme is a pioneering initiative designed to welcome passionate school leavers into dairy farming, offering essential training, mentorship, and pastoral care. Targeted primarily at Year 12 and 13 students ready to enter the workforce, the programme emphasizes animal care, sustainable environmental practices, and the latest in farming technology.

Launching with a pilot group in Canterbury this December, the programme begins with three weeks of intensive pre-employment training to prepare participants for full-time farm assistant roles with vetted Canterbury employers starting in January. This training covers fundamental dairy skills, safety protocols, and workplace readiness, ensuring participants are well-prepared from day one. Each participant will create a profile on Ag Assist, which will serve as their “online CV.” Together with Dairy NZ, we’ve developed a badge to be displayed on participants’ profiles as they complete their training modules.

The programme seeks dairy farmers in the Selwyn or Waimakariri districts who are passionate about nurturing the next generation of dairy professionals. As a participating farmer, you’ll play a crucial role in creating an environment where school leavers can develop the practical skills, work ethic, and confidence needed to thrive in the industry.

By joining the NextGen Dairy Farmers Programme, you’ll help these aspiring farmers build essential skills and confidence, paving a supportive pathway into New Zealand’s dairy industry. If you’re based in Selwyn or Waimakariri and want to be part of this impactful movement, your mentorship can make a lasting difference for these future farmers and contribute to strengthening New Zealand’s dairy workforce.
